Am 6. Juni 2002 verstarb Marcel Roskopf, der Gründer der Firma Roskopf Modellautos im Alter von 74 Jahren.
Ein Lehrer fragte 1938 den damals zehnjährigen Marcel Roskopf, was er denn einmal werden wollte und er antwortete, dass er ein Spielzeughersteller werden möchte. Der Junge war inspiriert von den frühen Wiking-Schiffsmodellen, die er jeden Tag auf seinem Schulweg in Berlin im Schaufenster bewundert hatte.
Natürlich hat Marcel Roskopf sein Taschengeld für diese Wiking-Modelle ausgegeben. Seine erste Sammlung wurde während eines Luftangriffes auf Berlin zerstört. Die Bomben haben auch die Fabrikationsanlagen von Wiking getroffen und Marcel Roskopf bekam die Erlaubnis, eine Kappe voll Modelle aus den Ruinen zu holen. Diese Modelle bildeten die Basis seiner neuen Sammlung, die bis zu seinem Tode existiert hat,
Nach dem Krieg studierte Marcel Roskopf Politikwissenschaften und trat danach in Berlin in den Staatsdienst ein. Die Modelle bleiben jedoch sein Hobby. 1955 gestaltete er im Nebenberuf eine Serie von Modellautos. Wiking hat damals schon beinahe alle Arten von Modellautos in grosser Stückzahl und guter Qualität produziert, deshalb hat Marcel Roskopf beschlossen, nicht in Konkurrenz zu dieser Firma zu treten. So entschied er, Militärmodelle nach dem Vorbild der neuen Bundeswehr zu produzieren. Da diese Art von Modellen von Wiking nicht angeboten wurden, war seine Serie ein grosser Erfolg.
Marcel Roskopf musste nun entscheiden, ob er eine Karriere im Senat machen möchte oder seinem frühen Wunsch, ein Spielzeugfabrikant zu werden, folgen sollte. 1956 entschied er sich für die Modellautos und 1958 zog dann seine neue Firma nach Traunreut in Bayern. 1974 zog die Firma nach Traunstein, Bayern um.
1982, nach dem Tode des Wiking-Gründers Friedrich Peltzer, präsentierte er die ersten zivilen Modelle im Maßstab 1:87. Die Vorbilder dieser Modelle waren Lastwagen der Marke Saurer, einer Schweizer Firma. Historische Modelle der 1920er und 1930er Jahre wurden später der Serie hinzugefügt.
1976 zog sich Marcel Roskopf aufgrund der Nachwirkungen eines schweren Unfalls aus der Firma zurück. Seine Frau übernahm für einige Zeit die Geschäfte des Unternehmens. 1990 stand das Unternehmen zum Verkauf. Wiking bekam den Zuschlag, obwohl sie nicht den höchsten Kaufpreis geboten hatten. Aber Marcel Roskopf glaubte, dass sein Vorbild Wiking die Geschäfte in seinem Sinne weiterführen und die Marke Roskopf überleben würde.
Aber er hatte sich getäuscht. Wiking stellte die Militär-Serie sofort ein und die Zivil-Serie wurde nach und nach aus dem Angebot genommen.
Marcel Rospkopf war sehr an Musik, Geschichte und Technik interessiert. Aber die meiste Zeit seines Lebens widmete er den Modellautos.

On June 6th, 2002 Marcel Roskopf, the founder of Roskopf model cars died at the age of 74.
In 1938 a teacher asked the 10 year old Marcel Roskopf what he wants to be and he answered that he wants to become a toy manuacturer. The boy was inspired by the early Wiking ship models he saw in a window display of a toy shop each day on his way to school in Berlin.
Of course did Marcel Roskopf spend his pocket money for these Wiking models. His first collection was destroyed during an air raid on Berlin. The bombs also hit the the factory and store of Wiking and Marcel Roskopf was given the permission to pick up a cap full of models out of the ruin. These models were the basis of his new collection which existed until the end of his days.
After the war Marcel Roskopf studied political science and then joined the civil service of Berlin. But models were still his hobby. In 1955 he created – as a sideline -a series of model cars. Wiking produced nearly all types of model cars in huge amounts and good quality and Marcel Roskopf did not want to compete with this company. So he decided to produce military model cars of the new German Army. These types of models were not produced by Wiking and so his series became very successful.
Marcel Roskopf then had to decide whether to make a career as a member of the senate or to fulfill his early wishes and become a toy maker. In 1956 he decided on the model cars and in 1958 his company moved into its new location in Traunreut, Bavaria. In 1974 the company moved to Traunstein, Bavaria.
In 1982, after the death of Friedrich Peltzer, the founder of Wiking, the first civil model cars in 1/87 scale were offered. These were models of Saurer trucks, a Swiss company. Historic models of the 1920s and 1930s and planes were added to the series later.
In 1976 Marcel Roskopf retreated from the company due to the aftermath of a serious accident. His wife took care of the company or some time. In 1990 the company was for sale. The company went to Wiking, although the company did not offer the maximum amount. But Marcel Roskopf thought that the company of his great example would continue his work in a way that is just what he likes and that the label Roskopf would survive.
But he was wrong. Wiking stopped the military series immediately and the civil models disappeared more and more from the Wiking series.
Marcel Roskopf was very interested in music, history and technology. But most of his time he devoted to model cars.
