Schuco BMW Isetta & BMW 507

Auf den ersten Blick passen die beiden nicht zusammen, der Kleinwagen ‘Isetta’ und das Luxuscabriolet ‘507’. Doch beide sind von BMW und beide kamen 1955 auf den Markt. Zusammen bilden sie ein verrücktes Paar, das Schuco anlässlich des 50jährigen Jubiläums im Maßstab 1:43 aufgelegt hat.

At a first glance they do not fit together, the small car ‘Isetta’ and the luxury cabriolet ‘507’. But both are BMWs and both were presented in 1955. Together they form a crazy couple which was issued by Schuco in scale 1/43 on the occasion of the 50 year anniversary.

BMW Isetta

Nach der Währungsreform 1948 kam der Wohlstand wieder nach Deutschland. In den 1950er Jahren wollten die Menschen nicht nur irgendeinen mobilen Untersatz haben, sondern auch zeigen, dass sie sich ein Auto leisten konnten. Wer bisher ein Moped oder ein Motorrad fuhr, wollte sich nun zumindest einen Kleinwagen kaufen.

BMW hatte zu dieser Zeit zwar Motorräder und grosse Limousinen im Angebot, jedoch keinen der nachgefragten Kleinwagen.
1954 stellte die italienische Firma ISO ihren Kleinwagen ‘ISO-Isetta’ vor. BMW erkannte seine Chance und erwarb die Lizenz zum Bau dieses Wagens in Deutschland. In nur einem dreiviertel Jahr konstruierten die BMW Ingenieure die ‘Isetta’ um, wobei sie den Zweitakt-Motor von ISO durch einen Einzylinder- Motorrad-Motor ersetzten.

After the currency reform in 1948 prosperity came back to Germany. In the 1950s the people did not only want to have any set of wheels, but they wanted to show that they are able to afford a car. Those who drove mopeds or motorcycles so far now wanted at least a small car.



At this time BMW had motorcycles and big limousines for sale, but no of these high-demanded small cars.
In 1954 the italian company ISO presented their small car ‘ISO-Isetta’. BMW realized its chance and acquired the license to build this car in Germany. In just nine months the engineers of BMW rebuilded the ‘Isetta’ and replaced the two-stroke ISO engine by a single cylinder motorcycle engine.

1955 wurde die BMW ‘Isetta’ offiziell zu einem Preis von 2250 Mark angeboten und wurde damit zu einem Publikumsmagnet.
Von 1955 bis 1962 wurden mehr als 130000 ‘Isettas’ verkauft. Diese Verkaufszahlen wurden nur noch vom Goggomobil der Firma Glas übertroffen

Auffällig bei der ‘Isetta’ ist vor allem die Fronttür, die an eine Kühlschrank-Tür erinnert. Die Firma ISO hiess ja zuvor auch ‘Isothermos’ und stellte Kühlschränke her.

In 1955 the BMW ‘Isetta’ was officially presented at a price of 2.250 German Marks and therefore became a crowd puller.
From 1955 until 1962 more than 130.000 ‘Isettas’ were sold. These sales were only beaten by the Goggomobil by the company Glas.
 

Noticeable for the ‘Isetta’ is most of all the front door which reminds to a refrigerator door. The company ISO formerly was named ‘Isothermos’ and produced refrigerators.

BMW 507

Als BMW 1955 den ‘507’ vorstellte, wurde er sofort zum Star. Und es waren dann auch die Stars jener Zeit, die diesen Wagen kauften: Elvis Presley, Alain Delon, John Surtees, Ursula Andress und Toni Sailer gehörten dazu.

Der BMW 507 wurde weitgehend in Handarbeit und nach individuellen Kundenwünschen gefertigt. Zwischen 1956 und 1959 fand der exklusive Wagen 252 stolze Besitzer.

Nur wenige Autos brachten es damals auf eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 220 km/h, die der BMW 507 durch einen 150 PS starken 3,2 Liter V8 Motor erreichte.

Sein Design setzte neue Maßstäbe und liess ihn in Konkurrenz zum Mercedes-Benz 300 SL und den inalienischen und amerikanischen Roadster treten.

When BMW presented the ‘507’ model in 1955 it immediatedly became a star. And it were the stars who bought this car: Among them Elvis Presley, Alain Delon, John Surtees, Ursula Andress and Toni Sailer.

The BMW 507 was produced mainly in handcraft and according to customers’ wishes. Between 1956 and 1959 the exclusive car found 252 proud owners.

At that time only a few cars had a maximium speed of 220 km/h, which the BMW 507 reached with its 150 PS 3.2 liter V8 engine.
 

Its design set new a standard and allowed it to compete against the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and the italian and american roadsters.
